Milford to Haslemere
Only 1 hour from London by train, this is a beautiful hike in Surrey. Starting in Milford and ending in Haslemere, the route crosses through the the heart of the Surrey Hills National Landscape,. featuring a mix of flat heathland and gentle uphill climbs.
Key highlights include:
Witley & Milford Commons - Managed by the National Trust, these commons consist of sandy tracks through open heath and birch woodland.
Thursley National Nature Reserve - One of the largest remaining fragments of lowland heath in Surrey, featuring extensive boardwalks and rare bird habitats.
The Devil’s Punch Bowl - A large natural amphitheater and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Greensand Way - The final leg follows part of this long-distance trail, providing elevated views toward the South Downs before descending into Haslemere.

Getting to the Trail Head
🚂 Train
There are frequent trains operated by Southern Railway from London Victoria to Milford, with services running roughly every 60 minutes. The most economical option is usually to buy a return ticket to Haslemere and simply get off at Milford along the way. Just make sure you check that your train actually stops at Milford, as the faster express services skip the station.

🚎 Transfer Tips
Tickets vary quite a bit depending on the time and route.
Railcards can provide up to 30% off the tickets during off-peak hours (after 10am on weekdays and all weekend and bank holidays).
The network railcard is valid for this journey.
If you are travelling as a group, consider getting a Daysave Group Off-Peak ticket which gives you unlimited travel on Southern Railway trains. Tickets for 3-4 adults costs 52 GBP and must be bought at least 3 days in advance.
You can purchase train tickets directly from train operators or via third party apps such as trainline which have slightly better interfaces. Please note that these apps do charge a small booking/handling fee.
